Everything in Richmond, Karoo, is within easy walking distance. That is the charm of small town living! By taking a walk though town you really get to experience the character of a place and we encourage all our guests to take to the streets and explore a bit! After all, you've been sitting in your car all day. Grab your camera and look for new angles to film the iconic Dutch Reformed Church or keep an eye out for unique textures on natural rocks and man made structures - this makes for great photographs, especially at sunset.

Step into history by visiting our local museum. The well stocked museum exhibits a wide variety of items from yesteryear. The passionate and dedicated curator can keep you entertained for hours with stories and tales - ask him anything about the local history. Definitely worth a visit!

MAPSA (Modern Art Projects South Africa), among others, host a substantial modern art collection here in our sleepy town. Phone the number on their door and ask if you can take a peek. Ask them about their resident artist as well as their book binding projects. It is well worth your time!

Grab some proper shoes and venture up the hill to Vegkop, a place steeped in history. Vegkop, as the name suggests, has seen it's share of skirmishes and houses an old fort used to defend the town against invaders. The view from there is quite something, especially at sunrise or sunset. Ask for the keys and directions at Richmond Info, across from the museum.

If you're yearning for some fresh air combined with Karoo tranquility then consider taking a shortish walk (or a jog) through the countryside. Just north of Richmond you will find a public gravel road loop road ideal for this purpose.
From Anra Rusgenot Guest House, walk up Loop Street (east), turn left (north) in Spring Street and cross the N1 at the Caltex filling station. Continue on this road, past the hospital and up the hill. It turns into a gravel road shortly after you have crossed the highway which will be evident when you hear the reassuring crunch-crunch of gravel beneath your shoes. You're now (briefly) leaving civilisation behind! Continue on this gravel road until you reach a T-junction where you'll need to turn left. This will take you westward until you reach the N1 again on the western side of town. Turn left towards town and right into Loop Street. You're now back in civilisation, if you can call it that! This route is about 6km in total.
Please note: Hikes are done completely at your own risk. Be responsible and exercise common sense. Take note that you will have spotty cellphone reception along this route.
